In the U.S., many people ask, “What do you do?” as if one’s job defines the person. I learned this when a serious injury forced me to leave a career with the military and suddenly no one quite knew how to introduce me anymore.
My job is not who I am. I travel widely. I meet fascinating and wonderful people. All help shape me and give me wonderful stories to tell. But no one position or place defines who I am – until this simple statement. I am a writer. A storyteller.
When you’re a writer, you don’t have to find your passion. It finds you. The hard part is learning your craft sufficiently that other people can share your vision.
